Welcome to the Ivanhoe Times
Langdon wins
Craig Langdon has been elected to represent the Olympia Ward, after yesterdays by-election.
Well we all received much publicity from this candidate during the run up to this election, let's hope that Mr.Langdon follows up on many of his promises.
The Ivanhoe Times will contact him for comment.
It’s Hot and Wet - Mosquitos and Your PetIt has been a sticky, wet summer and we are just finishing mopping up from the last heavy rain. The dogs are loving running through the muddy puddles along the Yarra. The kids have enjoyed floating on body boards in the middle of Chelsworth Park. Our gardens are overgrown with all the extra water - but what do these climatic conditions mean for our furry friends? Well if you have been out at dusk recently you have probably noticed the swarms of mosquitos that are thriving in these conditions. Our pets get bitten by mozzies too, and for our pets in Melbourne it can be much more serious than just an itch.
Aussie Farmer Direct - and IvanhoeWe are getting home delivery from Aussie Farmers Direct! This morning we received our first delivery from Aussie Farmers Direct - right to our door! After hearing much anecdotal praise about the service and the community involvement of the organisation, i decided to contact them and arrange to be part of the service. But first, I wanted to get our local school, Ivanhoe Primary School, involved with regards to the fundraising side of things. After this was established, I found the ordering process remarkably fast and simple to use, and all online. But you know what, any question that anyone has can be made person to person to 1300 MILKMAN, and the best and friendliest staff are more than willing to help. More than can be said for the recalcitrant and usually surly staff at the big supermarkets. And the quality is fantastic.

Environmental Sense = Economic SenseBen Landsberg Greens candidate for the Banyule City Council Olympia Ward by-election “Think global and act local” is the message environmentalists promote when describing how we can all make a difference to ensuring sustainable use of the world’s resources. That message encourages everyone to do their part for the future, and is particularly apt when considering how local governments can have an impact. The big ticket items, like carbon trading, electricity generation and deforestation are the province of national and state governments but local governments can make a difference by improving their own practices and helping households to do the same. Economic concerns are often cited as a reason for inaction, or delayed action, but there are strategies that can be implemented that can minimise the economic impact, or even strengthen the economy, while reducing our impact on our environment. The upcoming Banyule City Council by-election for Olympia Ward provides an opportunity to consider some of the ways we can address the threats to our future. Three strategies Banyule City Council could implement to do its part in enhancing the local environment while improving the area’s amenity and building the local economy are: a robust local purchasing policy; cleaning up the local environment, particularly our parks and waterways; and improving local transport options, such as public transport and bike paths.
Melbourne’s Dams Hit 50%Melbourne’s dams have today hit 50% for the first time in four years, but Melbourne Water has cautioned against misinterpreting the milestone. While the half-way mark caps an impressive storage rally during recent months, Manager of Water Supply John Woodland said levels remained low in historical terms. "Obviously, we’re glad the dams have reached the 50% mark but we need to keep it in perspective," said Mr Woodland.
